WHAT IS E-WASTE?
E-waste is any
broken or obsolete computer, printer, monitor, television, cell phone,
or other electronic device typically used in offices & homes. The
demand to manufacture newer, more efficient equipment and software is
pressing the need to safely and effectively recycle these obsolete
electronics. Many of these products contain harmful substances like
lead and mercury. These are considered hazardous waste and generally
may not be discarded in the regular trash. Instead, they must be sent
to a facility that has a permit for treatment, storage or disposal.
WHY RECYCLE?
Technological advances are consistently putting newer, updated products
on the shelf making relatively new items obsolete. The escalating rate
at which we use and dispose of these electronics to communicate, get
information and entertainment is creating a build-up of E-Waste. Some
E-Waste contains toxic materials that can pose health and environmental
risks, especially when disposed of in landfills, where toxins may leak
into the soil and ground water. Recycling cuts down on the amount of
waste that goes to the landfills and reduces the need for new resources.
